A nephew who no longer wants filming

Kind
Ethical dilemma

Prompt

Your older sister runs a family video channel with 200,000 followers, and the income now covers about half of her household's bills. During a visit, her 10-year-old son Theo tells you that he hates being filmed. Classmates have started quoting a video of him crying after losing a game, and he asks you to tell his mom without saying that the idea came from him. When you raise the subject carefully, your sister says that Theo loves the attention and that part of the channel's earnings goes into a fund for his education. What would you do?

How to approach this question

This MMI station tests whether you can stand up for a child's consent and privacy when the person you'd need to persuade is your own sister, whose household depends on the channel. Name the stakes: Theo's wellbeing and his right to a say in how he's shown online, your sister's income and love for him, and your relationship with both. Respect Theo's request not to be named, while accepting that your sister may guess where the concern came from. Think about options short of ending the channel, such as removing the video his classmates quote, filming him less, or letting him refuse specific videos. Weigh your sister's view that he loves the attention against what he told you. When a compromise suits one person and breaks the plan for another, look for middle ground and say which interest comes first.
