Uncle swaps diabetes drugs for supplements
- Kind
- Practical scenario
Prompt
At a family dinner, your uncle, who has type 2 diabetes, tells everyone that he has stopped taking his prescribed medication. He is taking an herbal supplement instead, which a popular online influencer claims reverses diabetes. He says he feels better than he has in years, and that doctors only prescribe medication because drug companies pay them to. How would you respond?

How to approach this question
This MMI station tests whether you can respond to a relative's health misinformation in a way that keeps the conversation open instead of pushing him further away. Begin by listening, and show genuine interest in why he feels better and why he trusts the influencer. Avoid ridicule or a lecture in front of the family, which would likely make him dig in. Share your concern honestly, and encourage him to talk with his own doctor about the change he has made. Respect his right to decide while being clear that you care about his health. When a follow-up questions your standing to speak, acknowledge your limits honestly and explain that you're speaking as someone who cares about him.
