A father insulting his son at youth sports: a medical school interview question
- Kind
- Ethical dilemma
Prompt
You coach a youth soccer team of 10-year-olds. At every game, one father shouts insults at his son from the sideline, and the boy has started crying at practice. When you gently raise it with the boy, he begs you not to talk to his dad because "it only makes it worse at home." What would you do?

How to approach it
This panel interview question about children and families tests how you protect a child when the child himself asks you not to act: the boy's distress is real, and so is his fear that speaking up will make his home life worse. Show empathy for the boy first, and take his words seriously as a sign the problem may go beyond the sideline. Name the father's role and your own responsibility as a coach to the boy and the team. Weigh options such as a team-wide rule on sideline conduct, a general conversation with all parents, involving the league, or reporting a concern about the boy's safety. Land on a plan that puts his wellbeing first, and explain how you'd keep supporting him whatever you decide.
