Tutoring student skipping paid sessions
- Kind
- Ethical dilemma
Prompt
You work part time for a private tutoring company. A 17-year-old student has skipped four of his last six sessions and asks you not to mention it in the monthly summary you send his mother, who pays for them. He says things at home are tense and that his sessions are his only excuse to be out of the house. What would you do?

How to approach this question
This panel interview question tests confidentiality against honesty: a 17-year-old asks you to hide his absences from the mother who pays for them, and he hints that home is difficult. Name each party: the student's trust and wellbeing, the mother's right to accurate reports, and your company's expectations. Ask aloud what he means by tense, and whether he's safe at home, before deciding. Weigh writing an accurate summary, encouraging him to tell his mother himself, and involving your supervisor. Commit to a clear plan, and explain how you'd stay a supportive adult for him whichever way you decide.
