From Zero Interviews to Two Medical School Acceptances
The starting point
Dylan finished a medical sciences degree at Western with a 3.96 GPA and applied. She got no interviews at all.
The problem was not effort, it was direction. She had built her extracurriculars around advice aimed at American applicants: shadowing, outreach abroad, the things that help a US application and do very little for a Canadian one. In her own words, she had been informed incorrectly, and the first cycle became a dry run that taught her how the process actually works.
What changed
She had sat the MCAT twice already, scoring 510 and then 512. On the third attempt, using Scholr's MCAT prep, she scored 519. What made the difference was having someone who knew the content well enough to trace a problem back to its root with her, rather than lecture at her: she describes working backward through a question until they found the gap, then rehearsing it until it clicked.
On the application side, an advisor helped her rebuild her profile around long-term commitments and interests outside medicine. She used the unlimited advising hours hard, meeting people two or three times a week and rewriting her OMSAS application eighteen times.
Interview prep was the part she credits most. Her advisors came to each session with ten questions already written and answered themselves, then timed her and gave feedback. She asked them to be blunt with her, and they were.
The result
Dylan interviewed at Western, Queen's and TMU, and was accepted to Western and Queen's. She is going to Western. On the cost, she is direct: price was her one hesitation, and she calls it the best thing she ever did, with the caveat that you only get out what you put in.
