Prompt
Your close friend Daniel's father died eight months ago. Daniel used an artificial intelligence program to build a chatbot from ten years of his father's texts and emails, and it replies in his father's words and style. Daniel tells you that he talks to it every night and that it is the only thing that helps him fall asleep. His older sister, Maya, who is also your friend, finds it deeply upsetting. She tells you that last week Daniel skipped the family's memorial dinner for their father to stay home, and she asks you to convince him to delete the chatbot, because he listens to you. What would you do?

How to approach this question
This MMI station tests empathy and judgment when two grieving siblings want opposite outcomes from you, and the AI technology at the center is new enough that nobody has rules for it. Start by recognizing that Daniel and Maya are both grieving and that your friendship with each of them is at stake. Avoid deciding for Daniel or acting as Maya's messenger. Explain how you'd talk with him, listening to what the chatbot gives him, sharing honestly what you've noticed, and asking whether it's helping him or keeping him away from his family. Consider suggesting a grief counselor, and decide what you'd tell Maya. If the station shows the technology shaping his choices, rethink how much weight you give his comfort against his relationships with the living.
