Monitoring software on student laptops

Prompt
A school district gives every high school student a laptop. It proposes buying software that scans everything students type and search on those laptops, 24 hours a day, including at home. If the software detects words linked to self-harm, violence or drugs, it alerts the principal during the day and the police at night. The company says that in another district, its alerts helped staff reach 30 students in crisis in a single year. Parents opposed to the plan point out that the same software flagged a student who was writing a short story for English class, and police arrived at her home at 11 p.m. Many families in the district cannot afford a computer, so for their children the school laptop is the only one they have. As a member of the school board, would you vote to buy the software? Explain your reasoning.

How to approach this question
This MMI station tests how you weigh student safety against student privacy when the same monitoring software that might reach a student in crisis also sent police to a teenager's door over a short story. Name the groups affected: students in crisis, every other student, families who can't afford a second computer, school staff and the police. Say what you'd want to know, such as how often alerts are wrong, who reviews them before anyone acts, and what happens to the data. Weigh voting yes, voting no, and voting yes with conditions, and note that poorer students carry most of the privacy cost. Give a clear vote with your reasons. If a follow-up offers a compromise that trades effectiveness for privacy, re-examine your reasoning openly rather than defending your first answer by reflex.
